I don’t do it for fat loss or weight control, other than my early thirties I’ve been within 10-20 lbs of a really good fighting weight and right now I’m right at 10 lbs off my ideal weight with a more muscular body comp than previously (btw I take a low dose of a glp-1 actually a next gen for a myriad of longevity reasons but I digress), but I do think the cellular autophagy is something to consider separately. There are a lot of ways to get your body to do this, fasting is one. I also am keen on keeping the immune system in peak condition. Note intense exercise and sleep are probably the top things to do for autophagy and immune health. So I do a 48-72 hour fast 2-3x a year. I’m over due for one and need to make it happen. I don’t get rigid on the length, after 24 hours the benefits start to accelerate. I’ve stopped at 48, 60, 70, and it’s not a “failure to stop early”. I will say this, much like supplements, if you aren’t exercising regularly and sleeping well, then focus on that first. Fasting is an extra in terms of metabolic/systemic benefits that should come after the behaviors that are well known and well studied. Happy starving though…. And be careful! Oh, at our age, add a pinch of salt to your water or take electrolyte supps when fasting, and if you have any symptoms that concern you softly break your fast. Oh and when you’re done don’t go out and eat a huge Mexican plate of enchiladas, reintroduce food thoughtfully, it’s actually part of the beneficial process.
